“To the 10! The 20! The 30!”
Who Dat?! No. The Saints aren’t plowing through a punt return. We’re plowing and shoveling through 30+ inches of snow in the DC-Metro and Baltimore areas as this final blizzard roars through. We’re knocking icicles off of our gutters, cleaning off our cars and hanging up our snow gear (soon, I promise) in the hopes of FINALLY going out and getting our party on. And it looks like the sun will be returning just in time for Mardi Gras. Ca c’est bon (’that’s good’)!
Rams Head On Stage brings the sound of New Orleans to Annapolis with performances by Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Doc Hochman’s Dynamic Dixieband, and Nawlins’ own Eric Lindell with Jamie McLean.
As the snow settles and the cabin fever reaches its climax (all snow and now play makes Jack a dull boy) join us Thursday, February 11 for Big Sam’s Funky Nation. Formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Big Sam blows the funk out of his trombone and refuses to let the audience sit still. Between solos and trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going both in movement and in replies to his call-and-response MC-style. A talented group of jazz-trained musicians make up the Funky Nation, bringing with them the improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that’s the hallmark of big band funk.
Tuesday, February 16 – Fat Tuesday to be exact – brings Doc Hochman’s Dynamic Dixieband. Annapolis’ own “Doctor of Jazz”, Rick Hochman, and his Dixieband bring excitement back to Rams Head On Stage, featuring outstanding Jazz and Blues musicians and Dr. Hochman’s piano artistry. Do Fat Tuesday right folks! The official start of Mardi Gras isn’t just about the boozin’, although that’s an important part. No Mardi Gras party is complete without the appropriate music – a soundtrack for the famed debauchery.
And finally, New Orleans’ own Eric Lindell performs with newcomer Jamie McClean on Wednesday, February 17. Blues guitarist and singer Eric Lindell has been described by the Chicago Sun-Times as “A tremendous raw talent with a poet’s soul…Lindell writes from the heart with a fully realized musical vision.” This time Lindell rolls into town with the well-versed and well-traveled Jamie McClean. Best known for providing his tasteful guitar textures to the New Orleans based jazz outfit the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, along with the Jamie McLean Band, McLean’s fret board mastery has garnered worldwide praise. (For Fans of: Marc Broussard, Delbert McClinton, Dr. John)
So, my friends, when it comes to this ‘Blizzardacalypse’ just remember that the end is in sight! And that shining light at the end of the tunnel is Mardi Gras!
Bonjour Mes Amis, et Laisser les bons temps rouler!
